Request access to a connector

Learn how to send an access request for a connector.

Written by Jamie Gaynor

A connector holds the credentials for an outside tool, and only a user with the connector sharer (or a tenant admin) permission can change who gets to use it. But if you have access to edit a connector, you aren't stuck. You can request the access you want and send it for approval.

This article walks through creating and submitting that request, then tracking it until a reviewer decides.

When can you request access

You can request access to a connector when you have permission to edit a connector but can't share it. In practice that means you hold the connector editor role (or you just created the connector but don't have the "Share connectors you create" permission), so you can open and configure the connector but the access controls are otherwise read-only for you.

Note: If you're already a sharer of the connector, you won't see the request flow. You can simply give access directly instead.

Composing your request

You build a request from the connector's access tab, using the same picker a sharer would use to grant access to the connector:

  • Add the members and groups who should have access, and choose a role for each. Anyone you add shows a 'New' badge, so you can see exactly what your request would add on top of the connector's current access.

  • If you're sharing with a whole team, add a space. Everyone with access to that space gets to use the connector once the request is approved.

As you build the request, the access tab previews which spaces would be able to use the connector, so you can confirm you're asking for the right access before you send it.

Add a request reason

Below the access list, you can add an optional request reason. A short note helps whoever reviews the request understand why the access is needed, which usually means a faster decision.

Note: The reason can be up to 280 characters, and you can leave it blank.

Send it for approval

When your request adds at least one new grant, a 'Request approval' button appears at the bottom of the connector. When you press it, a few things happen:

  • Your request is recorded with the connector, the access you requested, and your note.

  • The connector itself doesn't change. Nothing is granted until a sharer or admin approves.

  • If you had been working on the connector as a draft, submitting the request publishes it so it can be reviewed.

Track or cancel your request

After you submit, the connector shows your request as 'Awaiting approval'. While it's pending:

  • Your request is read-only. To change what you're asking for, cancel the request and submit a new one.

  • You can cancel anytime. Open the connector and select 'Cancel request' to withdraw it. Only you can cancel your own request.

  • A new request replaces your old one. If you submit a fresh request for the same connector, it replaces your earlier pending request and leaves anyone else's request untouched.

You can also keep an eye on every request you've submitted from the requests tab in monitoring, where your own pending requests sit alongside any you're waiting on.

For more on that view, see Review connector access requests.

What happens next

A connector sharer or a tenant admin reviews your request. They can approve it as-is, adjust the requested roles before approving, or dismiss it.

Approvals are additive by default, so approving grants what you asked for without removing anyone's existing access. Once the request is approved, dismissed, or canceled, it's resolved and leaves the requests tab for everyone.
