Give access to a skill

Give access to use and manage skills.

Written by Jamie Gaynor

A skill is a set of expert instructions Tines 3B can draw on. Access to a skill decides who can use it, who can change its instructions, and which spaces Tines 3B can use it in. This article covers the two skill roles and how to give the right people access.

Note: To manage who can access a skill, you need to be a manager of that skill. You become one automatically for any skill you create, so in most cases you already have what you need.

Skills keep access simple with just two roles:

  • Skill user can view the skill and its instructions.

  • Skill manager can change the skill's instructions and manage who has access.

To add people or groups, go to skills, open the skill you want to share and select the access tab. Add the members and group who should have access, and choose a role for each.

Tip: Adding a group is often the better move: everyone in the group gets access, including people you add later. Changes take effect right away.

Make a skill usable in a space

Like connectors, a skill only becomes usable in a space when everyone with access to that space can also use the skill. You have two ways to make that happen:

  • Add a space directly. On the access tab, add a space, and everyone with access to that space can use the skill there.

  • Match up access yourself. Give the same people and groups access to both the space and the skill.

The spaces section on the access tab shows which spaces can currently use the skill, so you can confirm it's available where you need it. People can also use a skill they have access to in their personal spaces and personal chats.

Remove access

You can remove access at any time from the Access tab, either by removing a member or group, or by removing a space's access.

Note: Removing skill access simply stops the skill from appearing where it no longer applies.

Create a skill

When you create a skill, you become its manager and user right away, so you can write its instructions, use it, and share it with others immediately. Creating skills requires the "create skills" permission, which comes with the skill creator role.
